Panchgani: Panchgani is a picturesque hill resort, situated at an altitude of 1334 m. Located at a distance of 270 km from Mumbai, Panchgani is just 18km from another popular hill station Mahabaleshwar. Panchgani is a small hill-station in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is located amidst five small hills, from which it derives its name (panch in marathi means five). All these 5 hills are topped by a volcanic plateau which is the second highest in Asia after the Tibetan plateau. These plateaus are known in the local term as “Table Land".
This can be seen in the architecture of the British buildings, the Parsi houses and the boarding houses that have been around for more than a century. Amble along the walkways, thickly canopied by lush trees and vegetation, and delight in the secrets you stumble upon. The River Krishna meanders through tiny hamlets, farms and ravines, hundreds of meters below. You can select a horse from one of the numerous stables and canter along unchartered territory through hidden lovers’ routes, to the caves and the Kamalgad fort.

Panchgani now faces immense environmental pressures due to commercial activities, opening of illegal hotels, vehicles and temperature inversion (due to humidity) from various new dams built to store water in the vicinity.
