“Fashion Street” is a street market situated opposite one of Mumbai’s exclusive clubs, the Bombay Gymkhana. It sells readymade clothes at very reasonable prices. The garments sold here are export rejects, and export “over-runs” which are often excellent quality clothes at knock down prices. But one needs to bargain hard to extract a good deal.

Clothing is one of Mumbai’s major exports, and at Fashion Street (Mahatma Gandhi Rd., across the road from Bombay Gymkhana), a motley collection of shops and stalls, you will pay a fraction of the prices asked in foreign stores. Much of what is here is surplus stock; other garments have been rejected by quality controllers. Start your haggling at under half the quoted price.

Fashion Street: Fashion Street refers to a cluster of about 130 to 140 clothing shops on MG Road in South Mumbai, India. Readymade garments are one of Mumbai’s chief exports, so the same clothes sold at leading US and European retail stores can be purchased on Fashion Street for a fraction of their price abroad. Furthermore, many proprietors haggle. Besides clothing, there are also several shoe and jewelry shops.
